Joining the Norwegian on seven-under par after day one were Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm, who head out at vastly different times for their second rounds.
Koepka will be among the first to tour the course with Hovland in the fourth-last group and Rahm the second-last, while Irish golfer Shane Lowry will also head out late on after a four-under first round to go tied for fifth.
Woods is fighting to stay in the competition after suffering from “constant” pain while shooting two-over. Rory McIlroy is in the middle of the pack, at one-over.
